About NC-ACCESS

NC-ACCESS, an expansion project of the North Carolina Network for Excellence in Teaching, is a multi-year initiative dedicated to developing and providing professional development programs to student development personnel at North Carolina’s community colleges. This website is designed to serve as a clearinghouse for all North Carolina Community College System student development services information.

Background
In the spring of 2006, a statewide survey was conducted to identify professional development needs and interests among the student development personnel serving North Carolina community colleges. The survey asked respondents about topics for professional development as well as delivery formats and past experience. A survey report containing results and recommendations led to the formation of a statewide Advisory Board to guide a new project and act on prioritized recommendations.

On June 8, 2006, the Advisory Board met to set priorities to be addressed by the project during fiscal year 2007. Board members suggested the project be named "NC-ACCESS: Achieving Community College Excellence in Service to Students." The following mission was adopted.

To provide relevant practical training and enhance the unique skills of the professional staff who help facilitate the success of students in North Carolina's community colleges

While the Advisory Board selected Retention and Orientation as the issues needing immediate attention, additional topics will be added as the project expands. Because many of the issues are interwoven among various college departments or units, there is some overlap and repetition. The need for cooperation and collaboration among all student services personnel is imperative. To deliver the highest level of service to students, all parts of the college must work together.
